Fitted Wardrobes in Poplar

  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Poplar

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Fitted wardrobes in Poplar: what you get

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. If you’re living with clothes with nowhere proper to go and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large number of homes around Poplar date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms are often compact, with plasterboard walls. Fitted wardrobes are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Where a small built-in cupboard came with the home, it can be reworked as part of the design.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Advice

Fitted bedroom furniture in Poplar

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Poplar were built since 2000 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Poplar. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Poplar. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

For families living near Tower Hamlets College, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Queen's House, about 1.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions from Poplar

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Poplar?

Yes, Poplar is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

My home in Poplar is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How do I get a quote?

Just send us a few details through our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote in writing.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It is common, and it’s allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Poplar?

An awkward room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, less than half a mile north of the centre of Poplar, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.
