Wall Beds in Poplar

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on wall beds in Poplar starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A real mattress for visitors

Wall beds in Poplar

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that’s sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor during the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If your home has a living room with a bed that folds away and a study that doubles as a spare room, that is what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around Poplar date from 2000 onwards, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor, rather than relying on the board alone. Any built-in cupboard that came with the home can be replaced or extended to match.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Wall beds for homes in Poplar

Homes built since 2000 make up about 66% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Poplar, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 63 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Poplar. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 89% of households in the area around Poplar, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near Tower Hamlets College, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Common questions about wall beds

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Poplar?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canary Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Is a wall bed safe?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How are wall beds priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Why bespoke in Poplar?

A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Making good the walls after other work

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

Pricing wall beds in Poplar

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • How you want to use the space

For a quote for wall beds in Poplar, drop us a line using the contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Why people ask for wall beds in Poplar

The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.9 miles south. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
