Alcove units for homes in Blackwall
One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. We make alcove units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clutter with nowhere to go and space for a growing book collection.
Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and around Blackwall many homes date from those years. Alcove units can give the sitting end of an open-plan room its own identity, without putting up a wall. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Alcove units in Blackwall: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 80% of the housing in the streets around Blackwall, with about 11% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Blackwall, Historic England’s list includes Balfron Tower (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north-west, and Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That usually means a van in Blackwall needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Bow Creek Ecology Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Blackwall is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 3 miles west of Whitechapel. We cover Blackwall as part of our work across Tower Hamlets, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Tower Hamlets, large and small.
We make alcove units across E14, SE10 and E16. We cover homes on streets such as Nutmeg Lane, Athol Square and Leamouth Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Blackwall include the A102 and A1206. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover Coldharbour (1 mile south-west), Leamouth (1 mile north-east), Limmo Peninsula (1 mile north-east), Poplar (1 mile west) and London Docklands (1 mile west). Across the rest of Tower Hamlets, our area takes in Whitechapel (3 miles west), Spitalfields (3 miles west), Tower Hill (3 miles west), Bethnal Green (3 miles north-west), Cambridge Heath (3 miles north-west) and Mile End (2 miles north-west).

How fitting works for alcove units
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and the alcoves, and we arrange a design visit at a time that suits you.
- We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, checking how far the walls are out of square.
- You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Ask for a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
The problems alcove units solve
A bedroom’s alcoves are often the best place for a wardrobe. Built into the alcove, a cupboard holds clothes without taking over the room, which matters in a smaller room.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:
- Clutter with nowhere to go
- Space for a growing book collection
- Room to work in an alcove
- Bowed walls and sloping floors
Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
What to check before you book
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
Where other trades come in
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

Your questions about alcove units in Blackwall
Is Blackwall in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. Blackwall is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
My home in Blackwall is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. Adjustable feet or a plinth take care of a floor that slopes.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop.
Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?
It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. We agree the height at the measuring visit.
