How we make TV and media units for Poplar
Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. Ventilation is planned into the design. It’s worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. If your home has a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and a tangle of wires behind the TV, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are normally already fixed in place. Many homes around Poplar are from those years, so TV and media units are usually designed around what’s already there. Any new socket is a job for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Fitting day, step by step
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
- A quote in writing follows.
- Once you’re happy, the unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Living-room carpentry in Poplar: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 66% of the housing in the streets around Poplar, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Poplar. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 66% of homes around Poplar were built since 2000, well above the figure for Tower Hamlets as a whole, about 45%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your children go to Tower Hamlets College or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Common questions about TV and media units
Is Poplar in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Poplar included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Poplar?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits. Keep the vents clear once it is in use.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.
What affects the cost of TV and media units
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- How square the room is
- How many doors and drawers there are
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Getting in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Where you live, with the postcode
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

How it is made
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges and corners well and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain to show through, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade.
