Under-stairs storage in Rayners Lane: what you get

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Rayners Lane, it can make the front door feel far calmer. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and needing a compact spot for a laptop.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Rayners Lane, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access awkward for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts with a few details from you about the space.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The storage is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 71% of homes in the streets around Rayners Lane date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Interwar houses usually have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable.

Living in a block of flats near Northolt Park station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

Some pull-outs are tall, with a rail for coats or room for a vacuum. Lower drawers suit shoes, bags and boxes. The design visit is where we agree the mix.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Northolt Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Rayners Lane?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It is a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A dark, wasted space under the stairs
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board

For an older house near St. Andrew’s Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
