Alcove units designed for your room

How we make alcove units for Greenhill

An alcove can also take a small desk, with shelves above and a drawer or cupboard below. It’s a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. Desk height and depth are agreed with you, and leave a route for cables to reach the sockets. Most enquiries start with bowed walls and sloping floors and standard units leaving gaps at the sides; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Newer homes often come with a TV point and sockets on one wall but nothing built around them. Many homes around Greenhill are from those years, so we design alcove units around the existing points rather than moving them. If you want an extra socket, that’s for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Your questions about alcove units in Greenhill

Is Greenhill in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes, we work across Harrow, Greenhill included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

How do you fit alcove units in a flat in Greenhill?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Alcove units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to use our contact form and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards. We’ll plan the desk around how you work.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch to say you’d like alcove units, with a note of the room they’re in.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that’s what you chose.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Why bespoke in Greenhill?

The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. We set the depth to suit the room. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Living-room carpentry in Greenhill: local notes

About 45% of the homes in the streets around Greenhill went up since 2000, and about 22% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Greenhill include Granada Cinema (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Greenhill, let us know during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Headstone Manor, about 1.1 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For families living near Saint Jerome Church of England Bilingual School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Northwick Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

What affects the price in Greenhill

What you pay depends on:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
