Alcove units in Wealdstone: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wealdstone went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 29% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Wealdstone is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Harrow sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Wealdstone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Headstone Manor, about 0.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For a family home near Marlborough Primary School, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Alcove units for homes in Wealdstone

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, depending on the look you want. A plinth can be set to line up with the skirting. These details are settled when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere to keep books and records and alcoves that are wasted space; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Wealdstone, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Alcove units typically go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which makes it our choice for doors and visible panels. It is a sensible choice where an alcove sits against an external wall.

Shelves

How thick a shelf needs to be depends on how wide the alcove is and what it holds. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.

How fitting works for alcove units

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You let us know which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
  3. You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. Once you’re happy, the units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Any structural work on the chimney breast
  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp

Your questions about alcove units in Wealdstone

Does a conservation area in or near Wealdstone affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow & Wealdstone station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so we scribe each unit to follow the wall. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away and we design around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
