FAQs: alcove units in Eastcote

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Eastcote?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

I live near Headstone Lane station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Will alcove units fit if my walls aren’t straight?

Yes. Each alcove is measured at the measuring visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, so there are no awkward gaps.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

That’s a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the units go in, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

About our alcove units in Eastcote

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, often all at once. Each unit is built in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. People usually come to us about alcoves that aren’t square and alcoves that are wasted space, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an area like Eastcote, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for alcove units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood helps shelves stay straight under books. Thickness is chosen to suit the span and the weight.

Shelves

Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Advice

Eastcote homes and alcove units

In the area around Eastcote, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Eastcote. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Harrow included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Eastcote, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Headstone Manor, about 1.7 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a period home close to St Lawrence, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For families living near Cannon Lane Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Eastcote is part of the London Borough of Harrow, about 2 miles east of Harrow. Design visits and fitting in Eastcote can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Our Harrow coverage includes Eastcote.

Design visits and fitting in HA5, HA4 and HA2 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Hill Road, Bridle Road and Cannon Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for alcove units. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Pinner (1 mile north), Roxbourne (1 mile south-east), Pinner Green (1 mile north), Rayners Lane (1 mile south-east) and North Harrow (1 mile east). We also make alcove units in nearby places such as Stanmore (4 miles north-east), Harrow Weald (3 miles north-east), Wealdstone (3 miles east), Little Stanmore (5 miles east), Greenhill (2 miles east) and South Harrow (2 miles south-east).

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

To get a quote for alcove units in Eastcote, fill in our short enquiry form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough sizes. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.
