Need wall beds in Seething Wells?

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before you decide. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

What you get with us

Wall beds in Seething Wells: what you get

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and is lowered again at night. It lets one room do two jobs, like a spare room that’s also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and paint it in a colour you choose. If your home has a real mattress for visitors and a bed that fills a little-used room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check during the design visit and choose fixings for each one. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on your lease.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Seething Wells is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near Surbiton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes, that’s a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Wall beds in Seething Wells: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Seething Wells, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Seething Wells, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Andrew (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Clock Tower (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home in Seething Wells is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Hampton Court Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. For families living near Maple Infants' School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
