Alcove units for your home in St Helier

Alcove units in St Helier

We work across London, including St Helier. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and talk through the design. Then you receive a quote; the units are then made at our workshop and fitted in your home. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about room to work in an alcove and walls too uneven for standard furniture.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around St Helier, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives alcove units a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Do you need alcove units in St Helier?

Often the alcoves are simply the biggest unused space in the room. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, so there are gaps at the sides and the top. A fitted unit fills the recess.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Alcoves that aren’t square
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Standard units leaving gaps at the sides
  • Storage that suits a period room

The wider area includes historic houses like Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.6 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Alcove units for homes in St Helier

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St Helier were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 69%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of St Helier, Historic England’s list includes Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Hill House (Grade II), less than half a mile north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 49% of households in the neighbourhood around St Helier live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, which suit alcove units built to their exact widths.

For a family home near Tweeddale Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

St Helier is about 1 mile south of Sutton, in the London Borough of Sutton. We design and make alcove units for homes in St Helier, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across Sutton.

Why bespoke in St Helier?

Some flat-pack shelves are thin and start to sag once they’re loaded. Shelves in a bespoke unit are sized for the span and the load, with birch plywood where it’s needed. Still, a decent off-the-shelf unit can be the sensible choice if you are renting or moving soon. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Questions from St Helier

Do you make alcove units for homes in St Helier?

Yes, St Helier is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Sutton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near St Helier affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even. We’ll help you choose at the measuring visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill, and we find a time for the design visit.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that’s what you chose.
  5. The units are fitted in your home, ready to fill.
