  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs

Loft storage in St Helier

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. We measure the route not just the room, so every section made in our workshop fits up the stairs. It’s a step that matters for any loft in St Helier. If you’re living with ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and needing storage in a loft office, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around St Helier, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels under the slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers in the knee wall let you use the deep, low space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How big the furniture is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Storage in St Helier homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around St Helier were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 69%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. St Helier is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Sutton is no exception. If your road in St Helier falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Sutton Common station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near St Peter's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

What prompts loft storage in St Helier

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It’s ideal for things you need now and then.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room

For a family home near Tweeddale Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Adding or replacing insulation
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Any work on the structure of the house

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts with a few details from you.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design and finish.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Your questions about loft storage in St Helier

Does a conservation area in or near St Helier affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in St Helier?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
