Alcove units for homes in Rosehill

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting. These details are settled when we visit. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast and somewhere to keep books and records.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Rosehill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. Alcove units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Alcove units in Rosehill: local notes

About 69% of the homes in the streets around Rosehill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 10% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Rosehill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Sutton has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Sutton Common station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Morden Hall Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Rosehill is in the London Borough of Sutton, about 1 mile south of Sutton. We can visit homes in Rosehill on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Across Sutton, we cover Rosehill.

Every home in SM5, SM4 and SM1 is covered for alcove units. Our area takes in homes on streets like Kelso Road, Selby Road and Quarr Road, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. Neighbouring places we cover for alcove units include St Helier (1 mile south-west), Benhilton (1 mile south-west), The Wrythe (1 mile south-east), Carshalton (1 mile south-east) and Sutton (1 mile south). We also make alcove units in nearby places like North Cheam (2 miles south-west), Bandonhill (3 miles south-east), Shanklin Village (3 miles south), Beddington (2 miles east), Roundshaw (3 miles south-east) and Cheam (3 miles south-west).

Around Rosehill

We fit furniture in homes around Greenshaw High School and Merton College. For rail, the closest station is Sutton Common station, about 0.8 miles south-west of the centre. Well-known places in the area include St Helier Hospital (close by, under half a mile south) and Honeywood Museum (1.5 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Bennett's Hole.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units stop at standard heights, so there is often wasted space overhead. A bespoke unit can run up to the ceiling or finish just under the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

Why choose us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote

What prompts alcove units in Rosehill

Often the alcoves are simply the biggest unused space in the room. Standard furniture seldom fits an alcove, leaving gaps at the sides and above. A fitted unit fills the recess from wall to wall.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Units that sit well with original features
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture

If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

What to check before you book

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, each one sized to its own alcove.
  5. We fit the units, scribe them to the walls and set them level.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Your questions about alcove units in Rosehill

Can you make alcove units for a home in Rosehill?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and Rosehill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rosehill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

It depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what fitting day involves before we start.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

That’s your choice. Full-height units give the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We will go through what suits your room when we visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

What affects the cost of alcove units

What you pay depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

For alcove shelves that carry books, birch plywood helps keep them straight over a wider alcove. We size the shelf for the span and the load.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits alcove units in a period room. The colour is agreed with you.
