The Wrythe Alcove Units

In The Wrythe, we design alcove units around the room you actually have. Your alcove unit is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Shelving for books and records

Alcove units for your home in The Wrythe

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

How we make alcove units for The Wrythe

In a typical Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast leaves an alcove on either side of it. Built-in alcove units put that space to work as cupboards and shelving that look as though they belong there. Where a room in The Wrythe has a pair of alcoves, we design a unit for each one after we’ve measured them at a design visit. We make alcove units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and alcoves that aren’t square.

Around The Wrythe, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Alcove units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Living-room storage in The Wrythe

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 40% of the housing in the streets around The Wrythe, with about 21% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of The Wrythe include Bedford Cottage Woodcote House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Strawberry Lane Baptist Church (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Sutton is no exception. Depending on your street in The Wrythe, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Bishop Andrewes Church, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For families living near Victor Seymour Infants' School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

The Wrythe is about 1 mile south-west of Sutton, in the London Borough of Sutton. Whether your home in The Wrythe is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list The Wrythe among 17 places we cover in Sutton.

  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make alcove units for homes in The Wrythe?

Yes. The Wrythe is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Do you cover homes near Carshalton station?

Yes, homes across Sutton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards if you want the two sides to differ. We will plan the desk around how you work.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted finish in your home. Both are in a colour agreed with you. Spray painting is smooth and even, while hand painting is easy to touch up.

How tall should alcove units be?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice. We agree the height at the design visit.

Do both alcove units have to match?

It is entirely your choice. The two alcoves are often slightly different sizes, so each unit is made for its own recess. They can share a style while doing different things.

What prompts alcove units in The Wrythe

Some homes already have alcove cupboards, but they’ve seen better days. New units are a chance to rethink how the space works.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Somewhere to keep books and records

The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

How fitting works for alcove units

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill, and we find a time for the design visit.
  2. We come to measure and talk through cupboards, shelves, heights and doors.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

How to get a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
