How we make alcove units for North Cheam

Some alcoves suit a full-height unit, with doors from floor to ceiling. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, and set out the shelves and rails around it. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a place for a small desk and somewhere to keep books and records.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around North Cheam, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Alcove units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Making good damaged walls before fitting

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Scribed side panels
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Panelled or flat doors

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in North Cheam?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Cheam?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Can you make alcove units for a home in North Cheam?

Yes. We cover North Cheam and the rest of Sutton. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Will alcove units fit if my walls aren’t straight?

Yes. Few alcoves in older houses are truly square, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.

The problems alcove units solve

For some, it’s about books, records or a TV. We can plan an alcove unit around exactly what you have, with shelf heights and depths to suit.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Shelving for books and records
  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Room to work in an alcove

Close to Nonsuch Park? Alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

How to choose a carpenter in London

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. Alcove units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you. If one alcove needs a desk or a TV space, this is when we plan it.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. Any scribing to the walls is done on the day.

Advice

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
  • Consider whether the units should reach the ceiling
  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold
  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly

Make a note of the paint colour used so any touch-ups match. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for, so mention heavy collections when we plan the unit.

North Cheam homes and alcove units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around North Cheam were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of North Cheam is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in North Cheam joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If your children go to Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to West Sutton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
