Alcove units in Sutton

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope. Each unit is built in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. If you are living with furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove and worn or badly fitted alcove units, that’s what alcove units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Whether your home in Sutton is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Period rooms bring sloping floors and mouldings; newer rooms bring stud walls and service boxing. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Note the sizes of large things you want to store
  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
  • Think about how the units meet the picture rail and cornice

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, treat the units gently: lift things onto the shelves rather than sliding them, and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Common questions about alcove units

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sutton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How do you fit alcove units in a flat in Sutton?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Alcove units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do both alcove units have to match?

That is your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. We can keep the details the same so they still look like a pair.

Should alcove units go up to the ceiling?

It’s up to you. Some people take the units right to the ceiling for the most storage, while a low cupboard with shelves above keeps the room feeling lighter. We discuss the options at the design visit.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can an alcove unit include a desk?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards. The desk is planned around the way you work.

Built-in living-room furniture in Sutton

In the area around Sutton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Sutton include Church of St Nicholas (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Sutton Baptist Church (Grade II*), less than half a mile south. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and the rest of London is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Close to Manor Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For an older house near St Nicholas Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.6 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at.

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Any structural work on the chimney breast
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, including the paint finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you have picked.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

To be fair, a standalone bookcase or cabinet can go with you to your next home. Fitted alcove units stay with the house and remain when you move on. It depends on how long you expect to stay. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
