What happens on fitting day
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You tell us about the room and what you want to store.
- We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build everything in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Walk-in wardrobes in St Helier
With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is made in our workshop and fitted to the room, scribed to the walls and set level. People usually come to us about somewhere for shoes to live and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around St Helier is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving a smooth finish.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers keep smaller clothes and accessories tidy, and they can sit below the hanging or within a run of shelves.
Questions from St Helier
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sutton Common station?
Yes, homes across Sutton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Is ventilation important in a dressing room?
Yes, it helps avoid condensation and mould. We design the units to let air move and walls should be dry before we fit.
Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?
In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window. We plan it at the measuring visit.
Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?
Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The width and height of the space
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you contact us:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Examples of the look you are after
To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Bedroom storage in St Helier
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St Helier were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 69%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of St Helier, Historic England’s list includes Mecca Bingo Club (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Hill House (Grade II), under half a mile north. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in St Helier joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For a flat near Sutton Common station, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses like Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.6 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
