About our fitted home offices in Sundridge

Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, the furniture must leave a clear way past. We measure and plan for the space you have in Sundridge. If your home has a desk buried under papers and wires with no tidy route, home offices made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Wherever your home in Sundridge sits in London’s mix of housing, home offices work best when the desk, shelving and storage are planned together. We plan cable routes too, leaving new wiring to your electrician. Shelf spans and thicknesses are chosen so books do not bow them.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift as well as the room, so home offices arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the space.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and go through the design. It helps to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

What affects the price in Sundridge

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The internal fittings

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Estimate the shelf space you will need
  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.

Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Tight cables can mark edges over time. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.

Questions from Sundridge

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sundridge Park station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Which materials go into your home offices?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Sundridge

Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. The desk stays clear for work.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A desk buried under papers
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • A desk in the wrong light

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bromley Palace, about 0.9 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

What to check before you book

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

How to choose a carpenter in London

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
