Alcove Units in Three Mills

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make alcove units for homes in Three Mills, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Toys and paperwork with no proper home
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast

Three Mills homes and alcove units

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Three Mills were built since 2000 (about 56%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Three Mills. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the streets around Three Mills (about 56%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so alcove units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near East London Science School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Tide Mill (known As the House Mill), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Three Mills is about 1 mile east of Plaistow, part of the London Borough of Newham. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Three Mills included. Across Newham, we cover Three Mills, along with the rest of the borough.

How we make alcove units for Three Mills

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, depending on the look you want. The plinth height can match the skirting so the units feel part of the room. We agree these details at the design visit, before anything is made. Typical reasons to get in touch are shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess and bowed walls and sloping floors, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A large number of homes around Three Mills date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer blocks. Living rooms in newer homes can be compact, so shallower units and wall-hung cupboards keep the floor open. Boxing for pipes and risers is common in newer homes, and the furniture can be designed around it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

Shop-bought shelving and cabinets can go in an alcove, and they’re normally cheaper. The trouble is normally the gaps: standard widths rarely match the recess, and uneven walls make every gap obvious. A bespoke alcove unit is made to your measurements and scribed to the plaster. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What alcove units can’t fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Any structural work on the chimney breast
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Scribed side panels

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Measure anything large that must fit inside, such as a record player
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
  • Check whether there’s a vent in the chimney breast
  • Mention parking and access when we visit

To clean painted units, a soft cloth that’s barely damp is enough. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, as they can mark the finish. Dry the surface afterwards.

Now and then, check handles and hinges are still tight.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the units you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

Advice

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

Most alcoves need scribing on both sides and sometimes at the top. It’s the difference between a unit that sits in the alcove and one that belongs there.

Shelves

Shelf thickness depends on the span and the load. Wider alcoves and heavy books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support.

FAQs: alcove units in Three Mills

How do you fit alcove units in a flat in Three Mills?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near West Ham station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?

Yes. Each alcove is measured during the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, which closes the gaps you’d see with standard furniture.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

It depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what to expect before we arrive.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
