Built-in living-room furniture in West Ham

About 39% of the homes in the area around West Ham went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of West Ham, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Terraced houses are home to about 30% of households in the area around West Ham, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, which suit alcove units built to their exact widths.

If your children go to West Ham Church Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For a flat near West Ham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Alcove units for homes in West Ham

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, often all at once. Each unit is made at our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess and room to work in an alcove.

Windows, doors, radiators and sockets decide where furniture can and cannot go. In any home in West Ham, those set the layout for alcove units before anything else. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near West Ham station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit alcove units in a flat in West Ham?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How tall should alcove units be?

That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice, or run to the ceiling for a built-in look. The height is settled at the measuring visit.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in West Ham?

It’s easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

The problems alcove units solve

Some homes already have alcove cupboards, but they’ve seen better days. New units are a chance to rethink how the space works, from the doors to what goes inside.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Walls too uneven for standard furniture
  • Worn or badly fitted alcove units
  • Furniture that doesn’t fit the alcove

If you live in a period home close to Church of All Saints, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in alongside the design and materials.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. New paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat the surfaces gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Note any vent or air brick on the chimney breast
  • Have any damp looked at before the units are made
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Make a rough list of what the cupboards need to hold

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, treat the units gently, lifting things rather than sliding them and avoiding any scrubbing.

Put coasters or mats under anything that holds water, since standing water can mark painted shelves. Wipe up spills right away.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood helps shelves stay straight under books over a wider alcove. We size the shelf for the span and the load.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
