Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Making good damaged walls before fitting

Alcove units in Mill Meads

One alcove can be given over to a desk, with shelving overhead and storage underneath. It is a neat way to work from home without giving up a whole room. We plan the desk height and depth with you, with a gap or hole planned so cables can reach the sockets. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cupboards in keeping with an older house and alcoves that are wasted space.

Many homes around Mill Meads have been built since 2000, and in a newer home the living space is usually open-plan, without a chimney breast. That means alcove units often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Plasterboard stud walls are common in newer homes, so heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Birch plywood

We often use birch plywood for drawer boxes too, where strength matters. The edge can be painted or shown as a detail.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing means trimming the edges on site so they follow the wall. This closes the gap between a straight unit and a bowed alcove.

Living-room carpentry in Mill Meads: local notes

About 56% of the homes in the area around Mill Meads went up since 2000, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Mill Meads is partly covered by the Three Mills Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Mill Meads. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Tide Mill (known As the House Mill), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live near Bob's Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Common questions about alcove units

Does a conservation area in or near Mill Meads affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in Mill Meads. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Alcove units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you build alcove units for alcoves that aren’t square?

Yes. Each alcove is measured during the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall.

How much will my alcove unit cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Mill Meads?

Simply drop us a line using the contact form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and talk through the design, including the paint finish.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you have picked.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. New paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat the surfaces gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Ask for a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.
