How we make fitted wardrobes for E15

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

What affects the price in E15

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bedroom storage across E15

Many older bedrooms across E15 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

About 37% of the homes in E15 went up since 2000, and about 36% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in the E15 postcode district (about 37%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. About 55% of households in the E15 postcode district live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

E15 is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Stratford: For a flat near Stratford (London) station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Theatre Royal, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in E15

The usual reason is simple: there isn’t enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, so you get more storage from the same floor space.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

Questions from E15

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We plan it with you when we visit.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
