Living-room carpentry in Upminster: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Upminster were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 10 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Upminster. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Havering is no exception. If your road in Upminster falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hare Hall, about 2.6 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. For a family home near Upminster Junior School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Living in a block of flats near Upminster station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How we make alcove units for Upminster

Period alcoves are rarely square. Walls bow, corners wander and floors slope, often all at once. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. If you’re living with worn or badly fitted alcove units and room to work in an alcove, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Upminster, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. Alcove units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

FAQs: alcove units in Upminster

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upminster?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Upminster station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Will alcove units fit if my walls are not straight?

Yes. Most period alcoves are out of square in some way, so each unit is scribed to the wall on site. A plinth or adjustable feet set it level on a sloping floor.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Upminster?

It is easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

We plan alcove units so any chimney vent stays clear. A capped or blocked chimney should still be ventilated to help stop damp and we design around it.

Why bespoke in Upminster?

In fairness, standalone furniture comes with you when you move. Fitted alcove units stay with the house and remain when you move on. It depends on how long you expect to stay. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits alcove units in older houses. You choose the colour.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we usually scribe the sides and often the top too. It is what makes a fitted unit look fitted.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a short description of the alcoves and your ideas, even if the design is only a rough idea so far.
  2. We visit to measure, look at how the walls run and note the skirting, picture rail and any vent. We also talk through heights, doors and shelves.
  3. You receive a quote with the design, the materials and the paint finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted on site, as agreed.

How to prepare

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Deal with any damp on the chimney breast first
  • Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
  • Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show

Doors can settle a little once the units are in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to line the doors up again, which deals with a door that starts to catch.

Avoid placing a heater hard up against the units, because constant heat isn’t kind to a painted finish.
