Alcove units in Heath Park

Alcove units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it works best. MDF gives smooth doors and panels that take paint well, and birch plywood is strong for shelves and carcasses. You can have a spray-painted finish from the workshop or a hand-painted one done on site, in the colour you choose. If you are living with old alcove cupboards that have seen better days and walls too uneven for standard furniture, alcove units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of alcove units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Heath Park, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Why people ask for alcove units in Heath Park

For some, it’s about books, records or a TV. An alcove unit can be shaped around what you own, with shelf heights and depths to suit.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Shelving for books and records
  • Alcoves that are wasted space
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Frances Bardsley Lower School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, discuss the design and check the route from the street to the room. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized to come through your door.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Scribed side panels
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Alcove units for homes in Heath Park

About 48% of the homes in the area around Heath Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Heath Park. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Havering included. Vans bringing furniture to Heath Park fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

Hare Hall, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If you live near Haynes Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Heath Park is about 1 mile west of Romford, within the London Borough of Havering. Design visits and fitting in Heath Park can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Havering.

Questions from Heath Park

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Heath Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gidea Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

Any vent in the chimney breast is kept clear when we design the units. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away.

How do I get started?

Simply message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. It is best done before the units go in. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
