Fitted wardrobes in RM11: how it works

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an tricky corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
  3. We send a written quote for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How our quotes work

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Homes across RM11 and their bedrooms

We make fitted wardrobes for homes across RM11, in Romford, Hornchurch and Gallows Corner and beyond. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.

The biggest shares of homes in the RM11 postcode district were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 44% of homes in RM11 date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 52% of households in RM11 live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Homes across RM11 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Heath Park: For families living near Squirrels Heath Infant School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Close to Haynes Park? Fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in RM11

The usual reason is simple: there is not enough storage. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It’s easy to touch up later, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there’s nowhere for dust to collect on top.

What to check before you book

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

How we price fitted wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls

Questions we’re often asked

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What if my bedroom floor is not level?

It is common, and it is allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

It is made at our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
