How we make fitted cupboards for Upminster

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, and we leave room for their work in the design. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and cupboards that suit a period house.

Walls in houses from between the wars are typically straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around Upminster is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upminster?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cupboards arrive finished, which keeps work in your home to fitting.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Advice

Fitted cupboards in Upminster: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 52% of the housing in the streets around Upminster, with about 32% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Upminster. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Upminster (about 52%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses of that era often have a hallway wide enough for a coat and shoe cupboard, and a box room that can take more storage.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Laurence, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Upminster station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner

Close to St. Andrew's Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. If a door catches, it’s usually a small hinge adjustment.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. We can’t advise on your lease, but it is worth doing before the design is agreed.
