Fitted wardrobes in Upminster: local notes

About 52% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Upminster went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 32% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Upminster, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Laurence (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Upminster Windmill (Grade II*), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Havering included. Vans bringing furniture to Upminster fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

Close to St. Andrew's Park? Fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a family home near Upminster Junior School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Living in a block of flats near Upminster station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Upminster is about 3 miles west of Romford, in the London Borough of Havering. We cover Upminster as part of our work across Havering, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Upminster is one of the places in Havering where we make fitted wardrobes, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

In RM14 and RM11, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here such as Station Road, Latham Place and Deyncourt Gardens, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted wardrobes. Other places close to Upminster include Upminster Bridge (1 mile west), Cranham (1 mile east), Emerson Park (1 mile north-west), Hornchurch (2 miles west) and Puddle Dock (2 miles east). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places like Romford (3 miles west), Gallows Corner (3 miles north-west), Heath Park (2 miles north-west), Elm Park (2 miles west), Collier Row (4 miles north-west) and Rainham (4 miles south-west).

Fitted wardrobes in Upminster: what you get

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, keeping rails at a height they can reach. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a bedroom that never feels tidy and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Upminster, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Why bespoke in Upminster?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That is a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room and are made for that room alone. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Upminster

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upminster?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near Upminster station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

How we price fitted wardrobes

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, particularly on an external wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and deal with any damp early.
