Wall beds in Upminster
A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it’s time to sleep. It lets one room do two jobs, like a spare room that is also a study. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. Typical reasons to get in touch are a hobby room with a bed for guests and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A bedroom in a house from between the wars typically has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. Around Upminster, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
Ready-made wall bed units are available and normally cost less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They come in set sizes and finishes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Why choose us
- Saturday work by arrangement
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Scribed to uneven walls
- A spray or hand-painted finish
See our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and what to look for in a quote.
What it’s made from
Bed mechanism housing
The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the mattress it takes.
Hand-painted finish
We can hand paint the cabinet in your home, once it is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
- Measure the clear space in front of the wall
- Think about how often the bed will be used
- Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.
Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism as well as the storage around it.
What wall beds can’t fix
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Getting consent under your lease
- Choosing a mattress for you
- Plastering or decorating the room
Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
Materials and parts
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Moisture-resistant MDF
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Arranging a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Upminster
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Upminster were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Upminster, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Laurence (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Upminster Windmill (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 79% of households in the neighbourhood around Upminster live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
For a family home near Upminster Junior School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Hare Hall, about 2.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to St. Andrew's Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Questions from Upminster
Is Upminster in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes, Upminster is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upminster?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Is a wall bed safe?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.
