Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits alcove units in a period room. The colour is agreed with you, and it is easy to refresh in years to come.
Shelves
We set shelf spacing around what you own, from paperbacks to tall art books. Upper shelves can be shallower for a lighter look.
Alcove units for homes in Wallend
Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, sometimes all in one recess. We make each unit in our workshop to the measurements we take, then scribe it on site, so the sides meet the wall closely rather than showing a dark line. Adjustable feet or a plinth set it level. If your home has standard units leaving gaps at the sides and walls too uneven for standard furniture, alcove units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Ceiling heights across London vary a lot, from tall period rooms to compact modern ones. In Wallend, as anywhere, we measure the height as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall alcove units can be. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- At the design visit we measure each alcove at several heights, because period walls are rarely flat or square. Then we go through the design together.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a written quote.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.
Before we arrive
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Why people ask for alcove units in Wallend
A move into an older home is a common reason. People who have just moved in want storage that suits the age of the house, and the alcoves are an obvious place to start. It’s also a good moment, before the room fills up.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Bare alcoves beside the fireplace
- Everyday clutter left on show
- Shelving for books and records
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
If your home is one of the older houses near St John the Baptist's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bespoke furniture isn’t instant: there is a design visit, a quote and making time in the workshop. In return, the unit is planned for your alcove alone, rather than the nearest standard size. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Why us?
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Scribed to uneven walls
- More than 300 projects completed
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

FAQs: alcove units in Wallend
Do you make alcove units for homes in Wallend?
Yes, we work across Newham, Wallend included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit a desk into an alcove?
Yes. A desk in one alcove, with shelves above and storage below, works well in many rooms. Height and depth are agreed with you, with a route left for cables.
How long are you in the house for the fitting?
It depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what to expect before we arrive.
Can the two alcove units be different?
That’s your choice. Matching units give a balanced, formal look around the chimney breast, but you might want a desk on one side and cupboards on the other. Shared details, like the plinth and paint colour, keep them looking related.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
