When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
About our fitted cupboards in Wallend
Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, and we leave room for their work in the design. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. Fitted cupboards are designed for the space you have. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How it is made
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the cupboards painted to match a wall or the woodwork, hand painting on site works well and is easy to refresh later.
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors can be flat, framed or panelled, painted to match the cupboard. Drawers below the doors suit shoes and small items.
How fitting works for fitted cupboards
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways. It’s useful to tell us about parking then, as a van normally needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Making use of tricky spaces in Wallend
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Wallend were built before 1919 (about 34%) and since 2000 (about 34%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 12 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Wallend. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. All of London, Newham included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Wallend is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
Eastbury Manor House, about 1.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. For a flat near Barking station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

The problems fitted cupboards solve
Standard cupboards do not sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
- Cupboards for a utility or boot room
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Margaret, about 0.6 miles east of the centre of Wallend, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- How parking will work on your street
- Real projects you can actually look at
Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wallend?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?
Yes, that is part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.
