DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Bespoke kitchens in Wallend

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. Each dresser is made for its wall and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. Typical reasons to get in touch are a kitchen planned around your appliances and a kitchen island with room around it; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Homes in an area like Wallend can come from many different periods, so kitchens range from narrow back additions to open-plan rooms. The kitchen is designed for your room as it is. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What we do not do

Not everything around bespoke kitchens is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows

Birch plywood

Deep pan drawers need a strong box, so birch plywood is a good choice.

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door looks crisp and even, in a kitchen as anywhere.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what applies at the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The kitchen is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Wallend

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wallend?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is Wallend in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, we work across Newham, Wallend included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How long does fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Wallend

Homes built before 1919 make up about 34% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Wallend, with about 34% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Wallend. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 33% of households in the area around Wallend live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Kitchens in London terraces are often narrow, sometimes in a back addition, which suits cabinets made to the exact width.

For an older house near St John the Baptist's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Close to Loxford Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Margaret, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
