Willesden Under-Stairs Storage
Under-stairs storage in Willesden: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
- Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
- A low corner too deep to reach into
Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Under-stairs storage for homes in Willesden
Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Willesden combine the two. Typical reasons to get in touch are stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and a low corner too deep to reach into, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With a large share of homes around Willesden built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Tips worth knowing
Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.
How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It’s used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
When you need someone else
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf storage is not designed around a meter or a fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Why us?
- Over 300 projects completed
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- We work across all London boroughs

If your children go to St Andrew and St Francis CofE Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Close to Roundwood Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.
- It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
- Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Getting a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Related advice
Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Willesden?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
I live in a flat in Willesden. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What affects the price of under-stairs storage?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
