Alcove units for homes in Alperton

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, and in a dining room a home for china and glass. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. Typical reasons to get in touch are shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess and empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In an area like Alperton, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits alcove units along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Wembley Central station?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

How long does it take to fit alcove units?

The fitting depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what to expect before we arrive.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Living-room carpentry in Alperton: local notes

In the area around Alperton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 57%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Alperton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Alperton joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Pitzhanger Manor, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. For a flat near Wembley Central station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St James Church Alperton, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Alperton is in the London Borough of Brent, about 4 miles east of Kilburn. From period terraces to newer flats in Alperton, we measure the room as it is and design around it. In Brent, Alperton is one of the places we cover.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Scribed side panels
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Sort out damp patches before fitting
  • Decide whether the units stop at the picture rail or run to the ceiling
  • Think about what you will store before we meet
  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets

Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in, even when the cupboards fill up. Air moving through the chimney helps keep damp away, which protects the units too.

Put coasters or mats under anything that holds water to stop rings and water marks on the paint. Wipe up spills straight away.
