Temple Bar Fitted Wardrobes
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Temple Bar starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Tall doors need a stable material. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, whether the doors are plain or panelled.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. People normally come to us about a room too narrow for hinged doors and wardrobes that are full to bursting, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Temple Bar built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Temple Bar
Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Temple Bar, with about 22% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Temple Bar, 29 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned ahead of time.
Living in a block of flats near City Thameslink station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Lincoln's Inn Fields? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.
Temple Bar is in the City of London, about 1 mile east of City of London. Wherever you are in Temple Bar, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across the City of London.
We work across the WC2B, WC2E and EC1N postcode area for fitted wardrobes. If your home is on a street like Shoe Lane, Drury Lane and New Square, or close by, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. Temple Bar is near the A4 and A40, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. If you are just outside Temple Bar, we also cover Temple (1 mile south), Clare Market (1 mile west), Aldwych (1 mile west), Blackfriars (1 mile east) and Covent Garden (1 mile west).
Around Temple Bar
The streets we cover here include those near British Library of Political and Economic Science, London Nautical School and Mercers' School and the streets around them. There is a railway station in Temple Bar itself: City Thameslink station. Other landmarks nearby include St Philip's Hospital (under half a mile west) and Gabriel's Wharf (close by, under half a mile south-east). For a walk, there’s Ludgate Hill and St. James's Park Lake.
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture and keeps everything out of sight.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- Not enough hanging space
For a family home near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Before and after fitting day
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
- List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then. Do not let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.

Questions from Temple Bar
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Temple Bar?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
