Smithfield Fitted Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Smithfield starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Need fitted wardrobes in Smithfield?

Fitted wardrobes in Smithfield: what you get

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

In a flat, a spare bedroom often doubles as a study or a guest room, so fitted furniture that keeps things out of sight helps it switch between them. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Smithfield. We plan the space in front so every door and drawer opens fully.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Smithfield?

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

Living in a block of flats near Farringdon station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Bedroom storage in Smithfield

Homes built since 2000 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Smithfield, with about 28% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Smithfield, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Sepulchre (Grade I), under half a mile south, and Church of St Bartholomew the Great (Grade I), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 83% of households in the streets around Smithfield live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For families living near Charterhouse Square School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a period home close to St Bartholomew-the-Less, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Is bespoke worth it?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What affects the price in Smithfield

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Smithfield?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Farringdon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of the City of London and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

We allow for it from the start. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front. We talk through both during the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
