How we make built-in bookshelves for the City of London
In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelving behind a desk for books and files and books with nowhere left to go.
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.
What affects the price in the City of London
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Built-in bookshelves for homes across the City of London
Some living rooms across the City of London are long knocked-through rooms; others are compact flats where one wall has to hold everything. Either way, built-in bookshelves are planned around how the room is used day to day. You choose the colour, and whether it’s sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand.
The biggest shares of homes in the City of London were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and since 2000 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in the City of London (about 40%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall. About 27% of homes in the City of London were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so built-in bookshelves are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
Homes across the City of London range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a quote in writing, then making and fitting.
City of London: Near listed buildings like Church of St Lawrence Jewry, less than half a mile north of the centre of City of London, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Fashion Retail Academy or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The overall size of the piece
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
What to send when you contact us
Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
For a quote for built-in bookshelves in the City of London, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
Do you need built-in bookshelves?
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. A bowing shelf is typically too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Low shelves children can reach
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- Shelving that frames a window
- Space for art books and records
Is bespoke worth it?
Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so it’s already halfway to built in. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish, and every part is planned for the wall.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we do not do:
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
Questions from the City of London
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What are your built-in bookshelves made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Do you cover the City of London?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes the City of London.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.
