Fitted Wardrobes in Blackfriars
In Blackfriars, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Not enough hanging space
- Mismatched bedroom furniture

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Blackfriars
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. People typically come to us about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and mismatched bedroom furniture; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Blackfriars, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the bedroom may be modest in size but regular in shape. Fitted furniture can make good use of every wall, planned around the space you need in front. Concrete and blockwork walls need fixings chosen for them.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What we don’t do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Spray-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Hinged or sliding doors
Flats, conversions and lettings
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
Bedroom storage in Blackfriars
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 40% of the housing in the streets around Blackfriars, with about 27% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Blackfriars, 35 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 27% of homes in the streets around Blackfriars were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.
For a family home near Mercers' School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. For an older house near St Ann Blackfriars, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Dr Johnson's House, about 0.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Blackfriars is within the City of London, about 1 mile east of City of London. Wherever you are in Blackfriars, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across the City of London.
Postcode districts we cover here for fitted wardrobes: SE1, EC1M and EC1N. We cover homes on streets like Oat Lane, Bear Lane and Shoe Lane, for fitted wardrobes and any of our other fitted furniture. Blackfriars is near the A4 and A40; on busy main roads, unloading fitted wardrobes takes a little planning. We also cover Temple (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile west), Bankside (1 mile south-east), Smithfield (1 mile north) and Clare Market (1 mile west).

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Blackfriars
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Blackfriars?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Blackfriars?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?
Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. We measure the slope carefully at the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
What it’s made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly for a smooth finish. You choose the colour before we start.

What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. We tidy as we go.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Starting with a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
