Fitted wardrobes in Bishopsgate

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. If you’re living with storage boxes stacked under the bed and wardrobes that are full to bursting, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, so the remaining walls have to work harder. That is worth planning for around Bishopsgate, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corners are designed in rather than left as dead space.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bishopsgate?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Bishopsgate?

Yes, Bishopsgate is within the area we cover, which takes in all of the City of London and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Bishopsgate homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 41% of the housing in the streets around Bishopsgate, with about 22% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Bishopsgate Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Bishopsgate. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Guild Church of St Ethelburga the Virgin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For an older house near Church of St Ethelburga, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Structural changes to the room

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Bishopsgate

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.4 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then so the doors run smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Why bespoke in Bishopsgate?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. It’s then assembled and fixed in the room.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
