What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it helps to tell them before fitting day. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Fitted wardrobes in the City of London

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. If you are living with too little room for clothes and empty alcoves in the bedroom, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Some post-war homes have lightweight partitions between bedrooms, so tall pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back where the wall allows. With many of the homes around the City of London built in the post-war years, we check every wall at the measuring visit. Nothing heavy relies on a thin wall alone.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

The City of London homes and fitted wardrobes

In the area around the City of London, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of the City of London include Church of St Lawrence Jewry (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and Church of St Mary Le Bow (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. All of London, the rest of London included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to the City of London fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near London Cannon Street station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 0.2 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

For some, it’s about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

If you live in a period home close to St Olave Old Jewry, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What to check before you book

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Questions we’re often asked

Is the City of London in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

I live near London Cannon Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. It can line up with the skirting.

Hanging rails

We keep the top rail at a height you can reach without a step. Higher space above can hold shelves for things you use less.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.
