Built-in bookshelves in Coombe Hill
About our built-in bookshelves in Coombe Hill
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. For a home in Coombe Hill, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are room for a record collection and bookshelves in keeping with an older house.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Coombe Hill, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
- The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.
How to prepare
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Questions from Coombe Hill
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Coombe Hill?
Yes. Coombe Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
I live near Norbiton station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How do I get a quote?
Just message us from the contact page. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
When is bespoke worth it?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Honest limits
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Shelves
Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support so it stays straight under books. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. The colour is agreed with you.
Living-room storage in Coombe Hill
In the area around Coombe Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Coombe Hill, Historic England’s list includes Dorich House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Galsworthy House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Kingston upon Thames is no exception. Where a street in Coombe Hill is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
For a flat near Norbiton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your children go to Robin Hood Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Close to Richmond Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
