About fitted wardrobes in SW15
Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns an tricky corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere proper to go and space under the eaves going to waste.
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SW15
From Hurlingham, Putney and Barnes to the quieter streets, bedrooms across SW15 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.
In SW15, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 44% of homes in SW15 were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in SW15, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so we look at both at the design visit.
Putney: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary the Virgin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Bishops Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
What affects the price in SW15
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
What we need to know
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Wardrobe shelves can carry more weight than you’d think. Birch plywood helps keep them straight across wider sections.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front as you prefer. Inside drawers keep the front simple.
Is bespoke worth it?
Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. If you are renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house.
What to check before you book
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Where other trades come in
Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Building work to create a loft room
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Decorating or plastering the room
Questions from SW15
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What happens during the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
