Built-in bookshelves for your home in Putney Vale

How we make built-in bookshelves for Putney Vale

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. Most enquiries start with a home library or study and shelves that suit a period room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Post-war blocks of flats often have concrete floors, ceilings and some concrete walls, and they need the right drill and fixings. With many homes around Putney Vale dating from the post-war decades, we check the walls at the measuring visit before built-in bookshelves are designed. On a lightweight partition, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Collections of records, art books or objects need particular depths and heights. Off-the-shelf bookcases seldom have the right depth, and that is where bespoke shelving helps.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Books piled on the floor
  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

For an older house near St John the Baptist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What to check before you book

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Putney Vale is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Putney Vale?

Yes. Putney Vale is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that’s for a plumber.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Putney Vale

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have simple halls and stairs, which helps when the sections come in. Even so, the route is measured at the measuring visit. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.
