Questions from Kingston upon Thames

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Kingston upon Thames?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Is Kingston upon Thames in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Let us know about heavy collections at the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Kingston upon Thames

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. If you are thinking about built-in bookshelves in Kingston upon Thames, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. If you are living with somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and bare walls that could hold shelving, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

You might live in a Victorian terrace, a 1930s semi, a mansion block or a recent flat, and a home in Kingston upon Thames could be any of these. Because walls and floors change with the age of a house, the design of built-in bookshelves starts at the measuring visit. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house

Near listed buildings like Church of All Saints, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Kingston upon Thames, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. You can take them to your next home. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records

Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the design visit, so we can allow for it.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
