About our built-in bookshelves in Becontree Heath
Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for art books and records and shelving behind a desk for books and files.
Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Becontree Heath, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it’s made from
Shelves
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.
Birch plywood
How much a shelf bends depends on its span and what it carries. Birch plywood helps keep long shelves flat, especially with a stiffening lip.
Becontree Heath homes and built-in bookshelves
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Becontree Heath were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Becontree Heath include Bentry Heath House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 44% of households in the area around Becontree Heath live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, and built-in bookshelves are made to those widths.
Hare Hall, about 2.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your home is one of the older houses near Hartley Brook Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your children go to All Saints Catholic School and Technology College or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Chadwell Heath station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Becontree Heath?
Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Becontree Heath is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
How do I get started?
Simply get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote.
How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, and that is worth weighing up. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Why us?

- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Over 300 projects completed
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
- The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Ask for a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
