How we make built-in bookshelves for Castle Green

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelves that sag under books and a home library or study.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Castle Green, so it is a layout worth planning for. Built-in bookshelves typically go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. The bookcase is made at our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

I live near Barking Riverside station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Castle Green?

Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Castle Green is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Castle Green?

A move into a period home often prompts it. Alcoves and chimney breasts make natural places for books, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices

If you live in a flat close to Barking Riverside station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
