Built-in bookshelves in Chadwell Heath

How we make built-in bookshelves for Chadwell Heath

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about empty alcoves that could hold books and books with nowhere left to go.

A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Chadwell Heath, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • A home library or study
  • Space for art books and records
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

For a family home near Warren Junior School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Chadwell Heath homes and built-in bookshelves

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Chadwell Heath were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Chadwell Heath include Granary to North West of Crown Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Crown Farmhouse (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Chadwell Heath is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hare Hall, about 2.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For an older house near St Chad's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chadwell Heath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near Chadwell Heath station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, often in birch plywood. Let us know about heavy collections during the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How do I get started?

It’s easiest to fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

Shelves

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones can follow your books.
