How we make built-in bookshelves for Dagenham
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you’re living with bowing shelves in an old bookcase and shelves deep enough for large books, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Dagenham, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for built-in bookshelves. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.
Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Dagenham
About 66% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Dagenham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Dagenham. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Barking and Dagenham are set locally. If your road in Dagenham falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
For families living near Village Infants' School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses like Rainham Hall, about 2 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Church of St Peter and St Paul, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Dagenham, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

When is bespoke worth it?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.
What happens on fitting day
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Ask for a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions from Dagenham
Do you cover homes near Dagenham Dock station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Dagenham?
Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Dagenham is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength, with adjustable ones in between.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
