Built-in bookshelves for your home in Dollis Hill

Built-in bookshelves in Dollis Hill: what you get

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. If your home has somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and shelving behind a desk for books and files, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Dollis Hill, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Dollis Hill

Is parking a problem for fitting in Dollis Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Dollis Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What are your built-in bookshelves made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that is often left bare and can frame a window seat.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Dollis Hill

Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Space for art books and records
  • A room lined with books
  • Shelving that frames a window

Close to Gladstone Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom

Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.

Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.
