Built-in bookshelves in Cricklewood

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Cricklewood

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. If your home has low shelves children can reach and bookcases that lean or wobble, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room normally keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around Cricklewood, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. Built-in bookshelves built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Living-room storage in Cricklewood

Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the area around Cricklewood, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Cricklewood. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. About 34% of households in the streets around Cricklewood live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Living in a block of flats near Cricklewood station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Fenton House, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Church of St Gabriel, less than half a mile south of the centre of Cricklewood, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Cricklewood

Is Cricklewood in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Brent, Cricklewood included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the paint.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so the shelves can be sized for it.

What affects the price in Cricklewood

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you are after

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
