Built-in Bookshelves in Kenton

In Kenton, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelves packed two rows deep

Built-in bookshelves in Kenton: what you get

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. People typically come to us about space for art books and records and shelves that sag under books, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Kenton, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

What affects the price in Kenton

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Kenton

I live near Kenton station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Kenton affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Tell us about heavy collections at the design visit.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built during the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Advice

Built-in living-room furniture in Kenton

In the streets around Kenton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 84%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 7%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Kenton include Church of St Mary and Parish Hall (Grade II*), under half a mile west, and Kenton Library (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the area around Kenton (about 84%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

Close to Preston Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For an older house near Church of St Mary, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. The wider area includes historic houses like Headstone Manor, about 2.2 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Kenton is within the London Borough of Brent, about 6 miles south-east of Kilburn. We cover Kenton as part of our work across Brent, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Brent.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
