Built-in bookshelves in Queen's Park: what you get
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. Typical reasons to get in touch are wasted wall space around a door or window and empty alcoves that could hold books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Queen's Park, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Is parking a problem for fitting in Queen's Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Queen's Park?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Do you cover Queen's Park?
Yes. Queen's Park is part of the area we cover. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.
What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.
How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Queen's Park
In the area around Queen's Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Queen's Park, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Brent included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Queen's Park is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For families living near St Luke's CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Queen's Park is about 1 mile north of Kilburn, part of the London Borough of Brent. From period terraces to newer flats in Queen's Park, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Brent.
Design visits and fitting in NW6, W9 and W10 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street like Kempe Road, Peach Road and Parry Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for built-in bookshelves. Nearby, we also make built-in bookshelves in Kilburn (1 mile north), Kensal Rise (1 mile west), Kensal Town (1 mile south-west), Brondesbury (1 mile north) and Kensal Green (1 mile west). Across the rest of Brent, our area takes in Neasden (2 miles north-west), Harlesden (2 miles west), Wembley (4 miles north-west), Kenton (6 miles north-west), Church End (2 miles west) and Willesden (2 miles north-west). Being one of the larger places in Brent, Queen's Park is covered for all of our fitted furniture.
Near you in Queen's Park
We fit furniture in homes around The Brondesbury Arms, St Augustine's Church of England High School and Maida Vale School. There’s a railway station in Queen's Park itself: Queens Park (London) station. Other landmarks nearby include Paddington General Hospital (0.8 miles south) and O2 Centre (1.3 miles north-east). Open spaces near Queen's Park include Greville Place nature reserve.
What it is made from
Shelves
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. The colour is agreed with you.
What prompts built-in bookshelves in Queen's Park
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.
Built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Low shelves children can reach
Close to Queen’s Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
Choosing a carpenter
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Real projects you can actually look at
What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
